When a line has to be replaced rather than repaired
Replacement is the right call when the pipe has lost the shape a repair would rely on. Four findings on the camera run point that way, and any one of them is usually enough.
- Collapse. A section that has caved in has nothing left to line against.
- Orangeburg. The pipe has already deformed. It cannot hold a liner and it will keep deforming.
- A belly. A sag holding standing water needs the pipe re-bedded at the correct fall, which means opening the ground under it.
- Multiple separated joints. Clay sections that have pulled apart leave gaps a liner bridges but soil keeps washing into.
Where the pipe is cracked or root-infiltrated but still round, trenchless repair usually costs less and disturbs far less. The camera decides, not a sales pitch.
What the new pipe is
Open-cut replacement in this area is normally PVC SDR-35 in four-inch diameter for a residential lateral. SDR-35 is a gasketed sewer pipe rated for burial, and it is what the counties expect to see on an inspection. Where the run is long or the ground is awkward, fused HDPE is the alternative, because it comes in continuous lengths with no joints to pull apart.
Either way the pipe is bedded on compacted gravel at a consistent fall. Most of the failures we dig up are not the pipe failing on its own — they are bedding that settled and took the pipe out of grade with it.
| Pipe | Where it is used | Joints | Expected life |
|---|---|---|---|
| PVC SDR-35 | Standard residential replacement | Gasketed every 10–14 ft | Commonly quoted at 50–100 years |
| Fused HDPE | Long runs, pipe bursting | None | Commonly quoted at 50–100 years |
| Cast iron | No longer used for new laterals | Hub and spigot | 50–75 years in practice |
How a replacement runs
- Camera and locate. We mark the line on the surface and record its depth so the trench is no wider than it needs to be.
- Utility locate. Colorado 811 is called before any dig. Gas, electric, water and communications all get marked.
- Permit. Arapahoe, Jefferson or Douglas, depending on your address. We pull it.
- Excavation. Trench opened along the marked line. Depth is the biggest driver of time here — a lateral at eight feet needs shoring that a four-foot line does not.
- Removal and lay. Old pipe out, bed prepared, new pipe laid to grade and connected at both ends.
- Inspection. County inspector signs off before backfill.
- Backfill and restore. Compacted in lifts so the ground does not sink over the next two winters.
- Final camera run. Footage of the finished line, handed to you.
What drives the price in Littleton
Replacement is priced largely by the foot, then adjusted for everything that makes those feet harder to reach.
- Length. A 35-foot downtown lateral and a 90-foot Ken Caryl run are different jobs.
- Depth. Past about six feet, shoring and a larger machine come into play.
- Surface. Lawn is cheap to put back. Concrete driveway, flagstone, and a street cut are not.
- Rock. The foothill side of Littleton hits rock more often than the flats.
- Trees. Working around a mature root ball slows everything down.

Call (303) 555-0147Questions we get asked
How long does a sewer line replacement take?
One to two days of work on site for a typical Littleton lateral, plus permit time beforehand and the inspection before backfill. Deeper lines take longer because of shoring. Street cuts add restoration time that is scheduled separately.
Do I have to replace the whole line or just the bad section?
If one section has failed and the camera shows the rest in sound condition, a spot repair on that section is enough. Replacing the whole run makes sense when the pipe is uniformly old, when multiple sections have separated, or when the material itself is the problem, as with Orangeburg.
Will my yard be destroyed?
An open-cut replacement opens a trench along the line, so the ground above it comes up. We backfill in compacted lifts and restore the surface, but mature landscaping and finished surfaces cannot be put back exactly as they were. That is the main reason to check whether trenchless is possible first.
What pipe will you use?
PVC SDR-35 in four inch for most residential replacements, which is what the counties here expect on inspection. Fused HDPE on long runs or where pipe bursting is used, because it has no joints at all.
Before you commit to a full replacement
Plenty of lines quoted for replacement only need one section. The footage is what tells the difference, and it is worth having before you agree to open the whole yard.
